I'm a little ashamed to say that I frequently read romance books simply because they typically are not challenging to me. (Kind of pretentious. Sorry.) They provide the same comfort and appeal as grilled cheese and tomato soup. Familiar plot lines, predictable sexuality, appealing if not well developed characters. Just...nice. So you see why I was totally suspicious of anything called a 'smart romance,' as though the writer herself is trying a little too hard to distinguish her books from other romance books. I don't know. It felt somehow desperate. Penny Reid, however, seems like an entirely kettle of fish. She has a profound and infectious love of language and literature which she effortlessly passes on to her characters, and indirectly to her readers. All this, while managing to be completely goofy and charming. She speaks to reader in me in a way that no other romance writer ever has. I don't need tortured, violent, dark souls to make me feel. Just good stories and characters that are so well written and believable that they actually remind me of people I know in my own life. She really is a smart writer and her books are smart romances.
